Final Shaping of Iron Objects, Kofun Period, Japan: Evidence from Omuro Mounded Tomb Group
The chance discovery of remarkably preserved iron objects in the Omuro Mounded Tomb Group in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, offers a glimpse into the heretofore-unknown final stages of their manufacture. Based on careful observation of abrasions on a knife's surfaces and edge, Scott Lyons and Masanori Kawano (Meiji University, Tokyo) have attempted reconstruction of the tools and gestures used to create the final shape of this and other iron objects from Japan's protohistoric period.
